Alexander Ivanov (1806-1858) - Russian painter, a master of historical painting, a representative academism by grandiose canvases «The Appearance of Christ to the people».

Alexander Ivanov, was born 28 (28) July 1806 in the artist's family. Eleven years of age received «outsiders» disciple of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Brought up in the academy with the support of the promotion of artists who studied under the guidance of his father, a professor of painting Andrei Ivanovich Ivanov. Having been in progress in drawing two silver medals were awarded in 1824 by a small gold medal for the picture written on the program «Priam seeks corpse of Hector from Achilles». Work was delayed for twenty years (1836-1857), and only in 1858, Ivanov decided to send a picture of St. Petersburg and come there with her. Exhibition of paintings and all the related sketches and studies were organized in one of the halls of the Academy of Arts and made a strong impression on the public.

Ivanov died on 3 (15) July 1858. Life medics have argued that the banal cholera, Soviet art - that of the suffocating atmosphere in society at tsarism.
