Winslow Homer (English Winslow Homer) 1836 - 1910.
American painter and graphic artist, one of the leaders of American Art in the XIX., A master of the romantic genre, the founder (along with Thomas Ikinsom) American realist painting. Most famous for his seascapes. Known as for his oil and watercolor. Most researchers considering Homer as a major figure in American art of the XIX century, influenced all subsequent developments in American painting. Homer was one of the first generation of American artists who created their own American art school. While most of his contemporaries regarded European art as an ideal, Homer, while experiencing the impact of a variety of artistic currents in his work first and foremost based on a purely American story.
Works of Homer is divided into two markedly different periods. Until the early 1880's, when he lived mainly in New York - in the painting is dominated by bright sunny landscapes and scenes. Since the mid 1880-ies H.U. live in the state of Maine, for his creativity more characteristic dark colors and scenes of violence and tragedy.
Winslow Homer was born in Boston on Feb. 24, 1836 in a family of middle-class, time is in financial difficulties. Since 1859 he lived in New York.
