Herbert James Draper (Herbert James Draper) - painter known for works on the historical and mythological themes, as well as portraits of his contemporaries. Draper was born in London in 1864. In 1884 began studying at the School of the Royal Academy. In 1887 he won the prize of £ 40 as a decorator.
Draper traveled to Spain, Morocco, Italy, France, Holland and Belgium. He worked in Paris in the Julian Academy (Academie Julian) in 1891 and rented a studio in the winter period 1891-1892 in Rome. Returning home, he opened a studio in Kensington. He exhibited his work at the Royal Academy in 1887. The first public success came to him with the painting "Sea Maiden" ( "The Sea Maiden"), exhibited at the Academy in 1894. He became a popular artist at that time. A retrospective exhibition was held in 1913. Draper died on Sept. 22, 1920 in London. While Draper received recognition during his life, his work is now largely forgotten and rarely found at auctions.
