Ekwall Knut was born on April 3, 1843 in the town of Sabie Tranås municipality in the family bailiff Niels Fredrik Ekwall and his wife, Emilia. Knut was the fifth of sixteen, an unusually talented children. Brothers Hugo and Gustav graduated with honors courses engravers, and older sister Emma, was the first Swedish woman - a painter who has received the Royal Medal.
